Found out, via an error on the iphone app, that you can simply access a feed of your instagram updates in any browser by following this link after logging in at instagram.com.

You can't open any links since they're formatted to be opened using the instagram app itself and you'll need to manually refresh but it still provides a useful point of reference if you're on instagram a lot and hate switching between two screens/devices all the time.

Since they already have this, web functional, I don't see any reason why we wouldn't soon be getting notifications for instagram via their website as well as on our mobile devices. There's absolutely no reason not to do it.
